On Creativity

I personally think the word 'creativity' has such a hollow ring to it.

It is literally jammed down our throats in every sphere of our lives - from our schools to our workplaces, the pressure is on to be original and creative and standout from the crowd.

And we are starting earlier and earlier each passing year. I have witnessed many times teachers in primary schools looking at a miserable attempt of a child's art or piece of writing and desperately trying to find its merits to reel out to proud parents - beacuse thats what the school advocates and thats what the parents want to hear. Every child is special and has hidden creativity just lying dormat waiting to busrt out the seams. What a load of rubbish. We are misleading our children into believing they don't need to learn any skills nor have any knowlege to be good at something.

Creativity cannot stem from nothing, it needs a base or some kind of fuel, perhaps even a channel or a springboard from where to lauch itself. Because otherwise it joins the ranks of chaos -  a lot of what we see today , on the net and in our workplaces- people with neither talent nor training playing at being original - and wondering why they don't succeed.

In old days apprentices learnt the trade from masters, whether that was art or mathematics or sciences. The emphasis was on learning the basics, perfecting skills, coping the technique over and over again to hone the skills and only after the master had taught what he had to teach, which sometimes took years and years, the apprentice could leave with his masters blessing and personalise the techniques and unleash their creativity. And even if they had no creativity in them, they could carry on practicing their masters craft to perfection and contribute positively.

But we don't have the time or patience to do all that these days. No wonder lack of true creativity is on the rise and creativity has become such a hollow word, with no substance.

The Offended

We have become a global community on taking offense over anything and everything. We not only take offense on a daily basis over trivial ...
