Lonely among Friends

The unfortunate circumstance of Robin William's death last week has shocked many, those who thought they knew him in person as well as those who knew him on the screen. It has also thrown into limelight the terrible affliction - depression and those who think they carry the burden of their troubles alone and have no one to turn to.

I must confess, one of Robin's quote that did the rounds on facebook not that long ago sent a chill down my spine the first time I read it. It was so hauntingly true and those who have felt like that at times in their lives can empathise how terrible some people can make you feel. It was ...

" I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up alone. It's not. The worst thing is to end up with people who make you feel alone."Robin Williams

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have felt that way at certain times in my life, among family, among friends, among colleagues - as if I don't quite belong, as if I am the odd one out - it's a horrible sinking feeling that starts at the pit of your stomach and makes your laughter hollow and your smiles achey and leaves your words stuck in your throat - and I have always had to pull myself up short from falling into the slippery slope of depression by being a self-doubter thinking OK, maybe that's they way I see things, maybe it's my perception that is flawed. Being a self- doubter and having eternal faith in goodness of others has always been my saving grace.

But the world and people can be cruel and heartless -one of the disadvantages of our fast paced life full of incredible gadgets is that no one has the time -  time to listen to your afflictions, time to look deeply into your eyes and see the sorrow, the fear, time to reach across and hold your hand to let you know they will be there for you no matter what...

RIP Robbin Williams, you will be missed, I just wish someone had reached out to you sooner...
